Coming Alive

After finishing all of my art for my big gallery show, I had the desire to paint just for the sake of painting…and not knowing what I really wanted to accomplish

I used the techniques I learned from Flora Bowley and squeezed some paint on to the canvas and started pushing it around. I used some fun wavy cardboard and started stamping it and other items onto the canvas.

And next thing I knew I was drawing one of my flowers again. I’d recently thought that  I’d like to do a series of these and it just started coming from my fingers.

I added some cut dictionary pages to create some leaves and outlined some lines in white to create some definition. And then I got stuck. I liked where the painting was going but I wasn’t sure it was done or what more that it needed.

And then I posted this photo on Facebook as one of my weekly studio updates. The response was so positive that I realized the painting was almost complete.

It needed a focal point and just a bit of “icing” to finish it off. I added some scalloped music paper to the bottom with a bit of paint and then began to flip through my stack of quotes that I’ve collected. Howard Thurman’s famous quote caught my eye and I chose just do words to complete my painting.
“Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.”

Overall I was really excited with how this painting came together-totally intuitive and no planning what so ever. This painting is currently for sale at Rejuvanest.
